Day 1

Students will learn how to use Microsoft Project 2000 to assist in their project planning. Participants should have some project management experience and be familiar with such terms as Gantt Chart, PERT Chart, task, critical path, and resource. The Introduction to Windows 2000 or equivalent knowledge is required.

Introduction to Microsoft Project

  • Fundamentals of project management
  • Examining major screen elements in the Gantt Chart view

Creating the Work Breakdown Structure

  • Entering tasks
  • Building the Work Breakdown Structure outline
  • Determining the duration of work

Sequencing tasks

  • The PERT Chart and sequencing of tasks
  • Modifying predecessor-successor relationships
  • Constraints

Assigning resources to tasks

  • Creating a base calendar for your organization
  • Creating a resource pool and copying the Resource Sheet
  • Assigning resources to the project
  • Working with costs

Working with views and tables

  • The calendar view
  • Customizing views

Finalizing the schedule

  • Adjusting task schedules
  • Resolving resource conflicts

Sorting and filtering

  • Sorting project data
  • Filtering project databaseline reports, track project progress, adjust schedules, assign resources, add subprojects, import and export data, and work with a PERT chart

Day 2

Students will learn how to use Microsoft Project 2000 for Windows to manage a project plan after a project has begun.

Setting the plan

  • Reviewing the project-management process
  • Creating a baseline plan
  • Previewing a baseline report

Tracking project progress

  • Modifying the environment for tracking
  • Entering actual data for completed tasks
  • Entering actual data for tasks in progress

Adjusting the schedule

  • Adjusting the schedule of future tasks
  • Setting and displaying an interim plan

Additional resource considerations

  • Working-hour considerations
  • Customizing resource reports

Subprojects and multiple projects

  • Adding a subproject to a master project
  • Working with multiple projects that share the same resource pool

Importing and exporting data

  • Importing data
